LONDON, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The British naval chief on Wednesday called for a strategic use of his country's naval force to prevent conflicts across the globe.
Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope also called for continued commitment to cutting-edge military technology.
The call was made after one of the country's petroleum companies had started drilling in the waters off the disputed Malvinas Islands and when Argentina strongly disputed the sovereignty of the archipelago.
He made the call at the International Institute of Strategic Studies during a debate about Britain's future defense strategy which already saw the army and air force chiefs outline their respective visions.
The admiral, the most senior serving officer in the British Royal Navy, is the country's First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff.
He said the credibility and effectiveness of armed forces rest upon their ability to fight and win in war, and this should be the benchmark against which training and developing complex military capabilities should be measured.
The admiral added Britain should be prepared to fight conventional wars in the future, possibly over resources.
"Competition between powerful states is already a feature of our post-Cold War world, as we shift from the uni-polar dominance of the United States to multi-polar influence and power.
"Competition for resources can only exacerbate the situation. We would be wrong to assume that states will no longer wage war," he said.
The admiral also made a special case for the navy to have unique attributes which have allowed it to be used to fight on land, on sea and in the air all over the world, and also to strategically contain and prevent conflict from occurring in the first place.
"From the maritime perspective, the ability to defend our nation and interests across the globe relies on a force structure that can provide the essential framework through which our range of capabilities can be delivered and supported," he added.
